The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) is one of the largest IT organisations in Australia. The department implements IT systems to facilitate the employment needs of the country. Some of those responsibilities are Australian Job Network and the Australian Job Search web farms.

I was involved in the Employment Service Contract (ESC3) project in this department. The department is on a strategic direction to migrate  to Microsoft .NET platform from a legacy system. I was involved as an Architect in this process. This system replaces the Mainframe 3270 screens with Smart Client and ASP.NET implementations. I was responsible for implementing the .NET assembly object model of the complete application. Here some features of the application. XML web services are used to exchange data between government departments and other extrenal data sources. I was the technical lead for the DEWR - Centrelink Special Task Force that optimized the web services communication between the departments. (Requested by the Cabinet minister at Parliament.)

  • Smart Client presentation layer that consumes .NET XML web services.

  • Kiosk implementation of a Smart Client interface

  • ASP.NET implementation for the largest job search site in Australia (Australian Job Search)

  • Middle tier is written in .NET assemblies.

  • The back end is DB2 and SQL Server 2000. Communication to the databases is done using CoolGen wrappers and Stored Procedures through a Data Access Layer (DAL).

  • Sharing information with other departments and Job Network Providers are done using XML web services. The web services are managed by UDDI servers.

  • We use Process Mentor as our methodology. Simply Objects is used as the modelling tool.
